Starting Up Your Device — Quick Guide

Quick guide: start up your Trezor device safely with Trezor.io/start®

Follow these concise, practical steps to go from unboxing to sending your first transaction while keeping your private keys safe. This guide focuses on what to do — and what not to do — in plain language so you can complete setup confidently.

Quick start (summary)

  • Download Trezor Suite or open suite.trezor.io from trezor.io/start.
  • Unbox and inspect the device for tamper evidence.
  • Connect device, initialize as new or restore from seed.
  • Write down the recovery seed on paper/metal — never store it digitally.
  • Set a PIN and optionally a passphrase for hidden wallets.
  • Verify addresses and amounts on-device before confirming transactions.

Unboxing & initial checks

When your Trezor arrives, inspect the packaging and tamper seals. Genuine devices ship with clear tamper-evident features — compare them to official photos on the Trezor website. Check the serial number and included documentation. If anything looks altered or missing, contact official support before powering the device.

Download & verification

Navigate to trezor.io/start to download Trezor Suite or open the web Suite at suite.trezor.io. Use verified app stores where available. After downloading, verify the URL is correct and, if offered, validate checksums or digital signatures to confirm you have the untampered installer.

Initialize your device

Connect your Trezor to the computer with the supplied cable. Trezor Suite will detect the device and guide you through firmware checks and initialization. Choose to create a new wallet (recommended for new devices) or restore an existing wallet using a recovery seed. If prompted to update firmware, allow updates only when connected to official Suite or verified installers.

Recovery seed handling

The recovery seed (12–24 words) is the single most important item: it can recreate your wallet on any compatible device. Write the words down in the exact order on the supplied card, or use a metal backup plate for extra durability. NEVER photograph or store the seed on an internet-connected device. If you split or share backups for redundancy, document procedures for access and legal inheritance.

PIN & passphrase

Set a PIN to prevent unauthorized use if someone obtains the device. The PIN is stored only on the device. For additional privacy and security, consider enabling a passphrase — this creates a hidden wallet accessible with the passphrase. Be careful: passphrases are not recoverable; losing them means losing access to funds protected by them.

Sending and receiving — first transactions

To receive funds, display the receiving address in Suite and verify it on your Trezor screen. When sending, the transaction will be shown on both the computer and the device; always confirm address and amount on the device before approving. Avoid copy/paste for large transfers; use the on-device verification to protect against clipboard malware.

Firmware updates & maintenance

Keep device firmware and Suite updated for security and compatibility. Only install updates from official sources and follow the device prompts closely. The hardware requires you to physically confirm firmware installation, which prevents remote tampering. If you experience issues after an update, consult official support for rollback or recovery options.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Device not recognized: try a different USB port/cable and restart Suite.
  • Firmware error: reconnect and re-run the update via Suite; if persistent, contact support.
  • Seed recovery failed: verify word list and order; test with a small transfer before trusting a backup strategy.

Security tips & best practices

Use a dedicated machine for high-value operations if feasible, enable secure backups, and periodically test recoveries with small amounts. Keep software minimal on machines that handle keys, and enable two-factor authentication for related services. Never share recovery seed words, even with someone claiming to be support — legitimate support will never ask for them.
